IDEA

Why I wrote this book in the first place

Writing my own book had been a dream of mine since childhood. Back then, however, I certainly wouldn't have expected it to be a book about China. After spending many years studying China, living in the country, and returning to it regularly, one thing became increasingly clear to me: Few countries are as important to our economic future, yet so frequently misunderstood. Public discussions about China often swing between admiration and criticism, between stories of extraordinary success and predictions of imminent decline. What tends to get lost along the way is context.

With Das eine China Buch, I wanted to create something that goes beyond the daily headlines. A book that explains how China became what it is today, how its economy, political system, and society actually work, and which developments could shape our future.

My intention was never to defend China or to criticize it for the sake of criticism. Nor do I want to tell readers what they should think about the country. Instead, I want to provide the knowledge, perspectives, and historical context that allow them to form their own informed opinions. Ultimately, understanding China is not about agreeing with it. It is about understanding a country that will continue to influence all of our lives.

READING

I did not see this coming

When I started writing this book, I had one main hope: that it would reach as many people as possible and help them better understand China. What I certainly didn't expect was for it to become a SPIEGEL bestseller shortly after its release.

This means even more to me given the current climate. At a time when China is often associated with economic challenges, political tensions, and geopolitical risks, writing a successful book about the country is far from a given. China is neither an easy subject nor a particularly popular one these days. That makes it especially encouraging to see that so many people are still interested in looking beyond the headlines and understanding the country in greater depth.

Of course, this achievement was never mine alone. Many people supported me throughout the writing and publishing process, and I'm incredibly grateful to my colleagues, the publisher, and everyone who has picked up a copy.

More than anything, I hope the book continues to reach new readers and encourages a more informed and nuanced conversation about China.
